4sqday 2012: It’s Coming!

Friendly reminder!

Mark your calendars — #4sqDay approacheth!

Two years ago, a group of passionate foursquare fans in Tampa Bay, Florida asked their mayor to officially declare April 16 (4/4^2; it’s delightfully nerdy) ‘foursquare day,’ and encouraged people in their community to check in to their local businesses on foursquare to celebrate.

Thanks to our amazing community, the holiday has exploded since then. Last year, there were over 1,000 meetups around the world, with 19 mayors declaring 4sqDay in their cities! With our 15,000,000-strong global community, this year promises to be even bigger!

4sqday 2011

I didn’t do much Foursquare Day celebrating this year because my dad got married on 4/15! Yay! It’s amazing to see how much Foursquare and Foursquare Day have grown and so nice of Foursquare to thank us for creating 4sqday last year!

Highlights from SXSW 2011: “Grow Some Balls: Build Business Relationships from Nothing”

One of my favorite talks at SXSW this year was Matt Vanhorn‘s “Grow Some Balls: Build Business Relationships from Nothing”.

Description: “Fear holds many people back in business. There is fear of not having enough to offer, fear of not knowing what to say, fear of rejection. This session is about how the game is changing and how to build quality relationships out of nothing while not being afraid. Business is about relationships and using technology to foster those relationships by growing social spheres of influence and creating a network of contacts of friends, acquaintances, and business partners. Also to be covered will be the advanced tips and tricks for making a cold connection a warm one, how to make a great impression, follow-up like a rock-star and how to complete deals that are not typical deals. Social media sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook have changed the way business is done. When should you add someone on Twitter versus LinkedIn versus Facebook? How do you avoid being ignored? What about instant messenger? Is the IM agreement the new term sheet?”

Recap: SuperConf

Wowza! SuperConf was awesome! Some great people came from all over the country to speak, sponsor and attend. I had no idea who Zed Shaw was, sat and talked with him for a while. Then found out who he is, and got to see him speak. Very cool!

Couple stand-out points:

4sqday.com Named Top Seven Beautiful Event Website Design

How exciting! 4sqday.com (which we created last year for Foursquare Day) was named #7 of 10 in Ten Inspiring Examples of Beautiful Event Website Design!

7. 4sqDay – Virtual/Aggregation

KISS website focused on social and location. The best way to aggregate events in a virtual environment. I guess I can officially invent the word ‘meta-event’ to describe the above and happenings such as Twestival, Meetups, Tweetups, etc.

Read the full list.

On the Agenda: SuperConf

Thought I’d let you know I just bought tickets to SuperConf in Miami Beach! It’s one of the coolest looking tech/startup events I’ve seen in FL. It’s two days.

The Gist: SuperConf is where kick-ass new companies launch. SuperConf is where speakers blow your mind, 8 times in one day. SuperConf is the culmination of great speakers, awesome companies, amazing patrons & shots of patron.

Day 1: Pitch event, and the winner will win $5k in cash and another ~$20k in prizes!

Day 2: Awesome speakers, including:

  • Chris Jennings
  • Kyle Bragger

Foursquare Day Featured on About Foursquare Podcast!

Welcome to 2011! As much of a cliche as it is, I really can’t believe that last year has come and gone so quickly. It seems that just the other day we were gearing up for 4sqday2010. Of course, last year it wasn’t 4sqday2010, but just 4sqday. Everything was so new then. Foursquare had just over 500,000 users – a tenth what it has now. There were no foursquare communities. Super Swarms were brand. The idea of “epic swarms” seemed absurd.
